About Vardzia
Vardzia is a vast cave settlement and monastery complex associated with Georgia’s Golden Age and the reign of Queen Tamar. Its rock-cut spaces include churches, living quarters, storage rooms, wine cellars, passages and defensive tunnels.
The spiritual centre of the complex is the Church of the Dormition, which contains important medieval frescoes. Vardzia is one of the principal attractions of Samtskhe-Javakheti and is commonly combined with Khertvisi Fortress during a full-day excursion from Akhaltsikhe. Visitors should expect stairs, narrow passages and uneven stone surfaces.
