About the destination

About Uplistsikhe Cave Town

Uplistsikhe is one of Georgia’s most important ancient archaeological sites. Carved into a rocky hillside above the Mtkvari River, the settlement developed into a significant political, religious and trading centre. Visitors can explore rock-cut halls, narrow passages, ancient wine-storage spaces, ceremonial areas and a hidden tunnel leading toward the river.

A medieval church stands above the older cave complex, illustrating how the site continued to be used after Georgia adopted Christianity. The terrain is rocky and sometimes slippery, so comfortable shoes are essential. Uplistsikhe is reached by car from Gori and should be included in a full-day itinerary.
