About the destination
Ambrolauri is a small mountain town located where the Rioni and Krikhula rivers meet. It serves as the administrative centre of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region and is an excellent base for exploring Lower Racha’s vineyards, churches, fortresses, forests and traditional villages.
The area is especially famous for Khvanchkara, a naturally semi-sweet red wine traditionally produced from the local Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties. Visitors can combine wine tastings with traditional Rachan dishes such as lobiani and Rachan ham. Nearby attractions include Barakoni Church, Nikortsminda Cathedral, Minda Fortress, Shaori Reservoir and the historic churches of Krikhi and Raketi. Two or three days provide enough time to explore the town and its surroundings comfortably.
