About this place
Nikortsminda Cathedral was built in the early 11th century during the reign of Bagrat III, the first king of a united Georgia. The cathedral is particularly famous for its richly carved façades, sculptural decoration and twelve-windowed dome.
Its interior contains frescoes dating mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. The monument has retained much of its original architectural form and is included on Georgia’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Nikortsminda Village lies approximately sixteen kilometres from Ambrolauri.
