About this place

About Green Monastery

The Green Monastery, officially known as Saint George Monastery, is located in a forested valley near Borjomi. It is believed to have been built during the 9th and 10th centuries by followers of the prominent Georgian religious figure Grigol Khandzteli.

The complex includes a stone church, a two-storey bell tower and traces of medieval monastic cells. The name is associated both with the green sandstone used in its construction and the rich vegetation surrounding the monastery. It remains an active religious site, so visitors should dress respectfully and behave quietly.
