About Gonio-Apsaros Fortress
Gonio-Apsaros Fortress is one of Adjara’s most important archaeological and historical sites. Its strategic location near the Black Sea and an ancient regional route brought it under the control of several powers, including the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. Visitors can walk along sections of the defensive walls, view archaeological remains and explore museum exhibitions connected with the site’s long history. Recently restored areas include Roman barracks and renovated museum spaces.
