About the destination
Martvili is a small town in Georgia’s Samegrelo region, surrounded by rivers, limestone gorges, dense forests and historic villages. Its best-known attraction is Martvili Canyon, where the Abasha River flows between moss-covered cliffs and small waterfalls. Visitors can follow a paved walking route through the gorge and, when weather conditions permit, take a short boat trip on the river.
The town also has significant cultural and religious importance. Martvili-Chkondidi Monastery rises above the settlement and has served as an important spiritual and educational centre for centuries. Other attractions include the Martvili Museum of Local Lore, Salkhino village, the former Dadiani summer residence and less-visited natural sites such as Balda and Tkhopra canyons. One day is sufficient for the main attractions, while two days allow visitors to explore the surrounding countryside more comfortably.
