About this place

About Sighnaghi Fortress and City Wall

Sighnaghi Fortress was developed during the reign of King Erekle II as part of a defensive system protecting the region. The walls surround much of the historic town and originally included six arched gateways and twenty-three towers. Sections of the battlements can be explored on foot, providing impressive views of Sighnaghi’s rooftops, the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. Each tower was historically connected with villages and communities responsible for defending the town. The fortress wall is one of Sighnaghi’s defining landmarks and a highlight of any walking tour.
