About the destination
Akhaltsikhe is the administrative centre of Samtskhe-Javakheti and one of southern Georgia’s most historically diverse cities. Its main landmark is Akhaltsikhe Castle, widely known as Rabati Castle, a restored fortress complex that contains a citadel, mosque, Orthodox church, madrasa, museum and other historic structures.
The city developed as an important commercial and defensive centre where Georgian, Armenian, Jewish, Catholic and Muslim communities lived for centuries. This multicultural heritage can still be seen in the architecture and religious monuments of the historic Rabati district. Akhaltsikhe is also a convenient base for visiting Sapara Monastery, Atskuri Fortress, Khertvisi Fortress and the medieval cave complex of Vardzia. One day is sufficient for the main city attractions, while two days are recommended when nearby sites are included.
