About this place

About Rabati Castle

Rabati Castle stands on a hill above Akhaltsikhe and dominates the city’s skyline. The history of the fortress begins in the 9th century, when the site was known as Lomsia. It was later reconstructed and developed by the Jakeli noble family, who made Akhaltsikhe an important political and economic centre.

The extensive complex is divided into upper and lower sections. Visitors can explore defensive walls, towers, courtyards, the citadel, an Orthodox church, a mosque, a madrasa, the former pasha’s quarters and the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum. The upper areas also provide panoramic views over Akhaltsikhe and the surrounding mountains.
