Akhaltsikhe/Place
A dramatic medieval fortress built on a rocky height above the Mtkvari River and the historic Borjomi Valley route.
About this place
Atskuri Fortress rises from a rocky crag above the Mtkvari River near Atskuri village. Its defensive history spans approximately the 11th to the 19th centuries, and its unusual shape follows the steep natural terrain.
The fortress controlled an important route through the Borjomi Valley. A hidden tunnel once connected the fortified complex with the river, allowing defenders to obtain water during sieges. The site has been destroyed and reconstructed several times due to warfare and earthquakes.
