About this place

About Jvari Monastery

Jvari Monastery stands on a rocky hill above Mtskheta and is one of the finest examples of early medieval Georgian architecture. According to Christian tradition, Saint Nino placed a wooden cross on this site in the 4th century, before the present church was constructed. From the monastery grounds, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view over Mtskheta, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the meeting point of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Jvari is included in the UNESCO-listed Historical Monuments of Mtskheta and is usually the first or final stop of a Mtskheta tour.
