About Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral stands in the centre of Mtskheta and is one of the most important religious monuments in Georgia. The present cathedral dates mainly from the 11th century and was built on the site of earlier churches. Its name is commonly translated as “Life-Giving Pillar” and is connected with one of Georgia’s best-known Christian traditions. The cathedral complex includes defensive walls, historic gates, carved stone decoration and surviving wall paintings. Several Georgian kings and religious leaders were buried here, making the site important both spiritually and historically.
