About Shio-Mgvime Monastery
Shio-Mgvime Monastery is located in a narrow limestone gorge outside Mtskheta. Its history began in the 6th century when Saint Shio, one of the Assyrian Fathers, settled in the area and founded a religious community. The complex developed over many centuries and includes churches, monastic buildings, caves and defensive structures. Its quiet setting and rugged landscape create a very different atmosphere from central Mtskheta. Because the monastery is outside the city centre, it is best reached by car or included in an extended Mtskheta tour.
