About Ushguli
Ushguli is a remote mountain community located at the upper reaches of the Enguri River, beneath the snow-covered slopes of Mount Shkhara. Situated between approximately 2,050 and 2,200 metres above sea level, it is among Europe’s highest permanently inhabited settlements.
The community consists of several small villages, including Chazhashi, Chvibiani, Zhibiani and Murkmeli. Its landscape is dominated by medieval Svan towers, stone houses, historic churches and open alpine meadows. Chazhashi forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property of Upper Svaneti because of its exceptional concentration of traditional tower houses and preserved medieval settlement structure.
