Ushguli/Place
Historic fortified structures traditionally associated with Queen Tamar and Georgia’s medieval Golden Age.
About this place
Several monuments in Ushguli are traditionally associated with Queen Tamar, who ruled Georgia during its medieval Golden Age. Chazhashi preserves the remains of a fortified complex described locally as her winter residence, while another tower and church are associated with a summer residence.
Although legends and historical interpretations are closely connected at these sites, the structures remain valuable examples of medieval Svan defensive architecture. Some ruins stand on elevated and uneven terrain, so visitors should approach carefully.
