About this place
Lamaria, also known as the Ushguli Church of the Mother of God, stands on a hill north of Zhibiani village. The basilica-style church, defensive tower and surrounding wall date mainly from the 9th and 10th centuries.
The interior preserves medieval frescoes created in a distinctive Svan artistic style. Visitors can also see old Georgian inscriptions scratched into the walls by worshippers over different historical periods.
The church remains an active religious site and has particular importance during Lamarioba, the local celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and avoid disturbing services or local ceremonies.
