About this place

About Ushguli Historic Villages and Svan Towers

Ushguli is formed by a group of small villages whose historic appearance has been preserved by their remote location and severe mountain climate. Traditional family compounds consist of stone residential houses and tall defensive towers once used for protection during invasions, local conflicts and natural dangers.

The towers rise above narrow village paths, farmland and stone houses, creating one of Georgia’s most recognisable landscapes. Unlike a reconstructed open-air museum, Ushguli remains a living community where local families continue traditional agricultural and cultural practices.

Visitors should explore the villages respectfully, as most houses, towers and surrounding fields remain private property.
