About this place
Bagrati Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Dormition, stands on Ukimerioni Hill above central Kutaisi. It was built in the early 11th century during the reign of King Bagrat III and became an important symbol of the unification of Georgia.
The cathedral suffered major damage over the centuries and was later reconstructed. Today, its elevated position provides impressive views over Kutaisi, the Rioni River and the surrounding landscape. It remains an active place of worship, so visitors should dress respectfully and avoid disturbing religious services.
