About Gelati Monastery

Gelati Monastery is one of Georgia’s most important medieval monuments. Located outside Kutaisi, the complex includes several churches, historic buildings and the remains of an academy that became an important centre of education and scholarship.

The monastery is known for its medieval frescoes, mosaics and close association with King David IV, commonly known as David the Builder. Gelati is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is normally one of the principal stops on any cultural tour of Kutaisi and Imereti.
