About this place
Mestia’s historic neighbourhoods preserve traditional Svan residential complexes formed by stone houses and tall defensive towers. The towers were built as places of protection during attacks, local conflicts and natural disasters.
Many towers contain four or five levels connected by wooden ladders, with defensive openings near the upper section. Around 45 historic towers survive in Mestia, creating one of the most distinctive townscapes in Georgia. Visitors can admire them while walking through Seti, Lanchvali and Laghami neighbourhoods.
