About Mestia
Mestia is the main town and administrative centre of Upper Svaneti, located at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level. The town is famous for its medieval defensive towers, traditional stone houses, historic churches and spectacular views of peaks such as Ushba and Tetnuldi.
For centuries, Svaneti’s remote location helped protect important Georgian religious and cultural treasures. Many of these objects are now preserved in the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography. Mestia is also the starting point for numerous hiking, skiing and mountain excursions, including Koruldi Lakes, Chalaadi Glacier, Hatsvali, Tetnuldi, Mazeri and Ushguli. Two days are enough for the main attractions, while three or four days allow time for hiking and regional excursions.
