About Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography

The Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography is one of Mestia’s principal cultural attractions. Founded in 1936, the museum preserves archaeological objects, coins, manuscripts, traditional clothing, weapons, jewellery and important works of medieval religious art.

Svaneti historically served as a secure refuge for treasures moved from other parts of Georgia during invasions. The museum’s collection helps visitors understand the region’s Christian heritage, traditional customs and isolated mountain lifestyle.
